This Privacy Policy explains how After ("we," "us," "our") handles information in connection with the After mobile application (the "App"). We wrote this policy to be as precise as possible about what stays on your device and what doesn't. Please read Section 4 carefully, as AI features work differently from the rest of the App.
After was built around a simple premise: what you write about your grief, your breakup, or your loss is yours, and it should stay yours. This policy describes, in detail, every category of information the App touches and exactly where it goes.
Your journal entries, mood logs, and onboarding answers are stored only on your device. They are not backed up, synced, or uploaded to any server by After, and we do not have a copy of them.
The exception is AI features. When you use Chat, daily prompts, weekly reflections, or the "Arc" summary, the relevant text (your message, plus your recent journal entries, used to give you a more informed response) is sent to our backend and forwarded to our AI provider to generate a response. That content is used transiently to produce your response; it is not stored in a database by After. See Section 4 for full detail.
We do not sell your data, and we do not run advertising in the App.
This includes journal entries, mood check-ins, onboarding responses (such as loss type, current emotion, and optional loss date), and chat messages. With the exception of AI processing described in Section 4, this content is stored exclusively in a local database on your device (Room/SQLite) and is never transmitted to us.
We collect limited, content-free product analytics (see Section 5), such as which screens you open and which features you use, along with technical crash and diagnostic data (see Section 6). We do not tie this information to your journal content, your name, your email address, or any other direct identifier, because the App does not collect any of those in the first place.
We do not require or collect your name, email address, phone number, or any account credentials, because After has no account system. We do not access your contacts, photos, location, camera, or microphone.
Some of the most valuable parts of After (the Chat companion, evolving daily prompts, weekly reflections, and the "Arc" journey summary) are powered by a third-party AI language model. To generate these, the App sends relevant text to our backend, which forwards it to our AI provider (Mistral AI) to produce a response. This is different from how your journal is normally stored, so we want to be explicit about it:
We use basic, privacy-preserving product analytics to understand how the App is used in aggregate, for example, screen views, feature usage, and paywall conversion. This is collected in a form that does not include journal text, mood labels tied to specific content, chat messages, or any other free-text content you write. Analytics data is used only to improve the App and is not sold or shared for advertising purposes.
We use crash reporting to help us identify and fix bugs. It is configured to exclude your journal content, chat messages, and any other free-text you write from crash reports and stack traces. Only technical diagnostic information, such as device type, OS version, and the point in the App where a crash occurred, is collected.
Subscriptions are billed and processed entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We never receive or store your payment card number, billing address, or other payment credentials. We may receive limited, non-financial subscription status information (such as whether a trial or subscription is active) from Apple or Google in order to unlock the relevant features in the App.
Push notifications are off by default. If you enable them in Settings, reminders are scheduled locally on your device; enabling notifications does not transmit journal content anywhere.
We do not sell your personal information. We share information only with the following categories of service providers, solely to operate the App:
| Who | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mistral AI (AI model provider) | Chat messages and, where applicable, summary context needed to generate that response | To generate Chat replies, prompts, reflections, and the Arc summary |
| Cloud infrastructure providers | AI feature requests; anonymized analytics events; crash diagnostics | Backend hosting for AI features, content-free analytics, and crash reporting |
| Apple / Google (app stores) | Subscription and payment processing | Billing, trial management, and subscription status |
We may also disclose information if required to do so by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of After, our users, or the public.
Because your journal, mood logs, and onboarding data live on your device, you are always in control of them. You can:
Anonymized, content-free analytics events are retained by our analytics provider for a limited period for aggregate reporting purposes and are not linked back to an individual user identity.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA/CPRA to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal information. Because After does not maintain a server-side account or profile tied to your identity, the most direct way to exercise these rights is through the in-app controls described in Section 10: deleting data locally removes it, as we do not hold a separate copy. If you have questions about data processed through AI features (Section 4) or analytics (Section 5), contact us using the details in Section 16 and we will respond consistent with applicable law.
After is intended for users aged 16 and older, as described in our Terms of Service. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has used the App to provide us information (such as through AI features), please contact us so we can address it.
Content processed through AI features (Section 4) may be transmitted to and processed in countries other than your own, including the United States and the European Union, where our infrastructure and AI provider operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) for these transfers.
Your journal data benefits from your device's own operating system security (such as device encryption and app sandboxing), since it never leaves your device except as described in Section 4. Data in transit to our backend for AI features is encrypted. No method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, particularly as we add or change features. We will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide notice within the App.
